@OW_Panthers Women’s Soccer volunteers at Tobay Beach Dune Stabilization Project

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's soccer spent March 25 giving back to the community and the Town of Oyster Bay by volunteering for the second-consecutive year at the Tobay Beach Dune Stabilization Project.
 
"This was a rewarding experience that we shared with our families as we participated protecting the coastline," said Old Westbury women's soccer head coach Betty Bohringer. 

Bohringer, along with Old Westbury women's soccer student-athletes Mayra Bonilla and Mary Clark joined groups of volunteers protecting and enhancing the ecosystem by planting seedling stalks of dune grass.  Planting of grass is extremely helpful in stabilizing and building dunes because it provides a natural buffer against storm surge and high winds.

The Town of Oyster Bay Dune Stabilization Project not only benefits the environment, but also provides an excellent opportunity for community groups and volunteers to take part in a worthwhile endeavor.

"The high tide the night before rose all the way to the sand dunes where we were planting the dune grass.  It was a beautiful day that over 200 volunteers contributed to the project.  The high tides and high winds constantly change and erode the beach that we all enjoy so much.  This project helps keep sand on our Long Island beach and protects the shoreline from flooding," added Bohringer.
