Swimming competes at USMMA road quad meet

Old Westbury is back in the pool Friday (Nov. 22) for a Skyline tri-meet with Purchase and St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn)

KINGS POINT, N.Y. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's and women's swimming returned to the pool Wednesday evening on the road against the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners, St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears and St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles inside O'Hara Pool in Kings Point, New York.  The Panther men suffered a 152-38 setback to the host Mariners while USMMA completed the sweep of Old Westbury by a final score of 150-40. The Panther women loss 127-41 to the Bears and 111-42 to the Golden Eagles.

Leading the Panther men was Joseph Malone, who would go on to take second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.20) and 500-yard freestyle (5:22.68).  He also placed third in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:49.80). Daniel McCartney followed with a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.67) and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (24.54).  Alberto Matsuura (100-yard freestyle, 1:07.81) and Austin Young (100-yard backstroke, 1:27.99) captured second place in their races. Daniel Grinchenko finished in third place (1:09.02) and in fourth place (3:08.89) in the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyles events.  Elijah Lee sat in fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:31.85) and in fifth (34.32) in the 50-yard freestyle races while Jassell Mateo claimed sixth place in the 50-yard freestyle (35.99).  Lorenzo Cusumano swam in the 200-yard freestyle race to take fifth in a time of 3:24.89.

The 200-yard freestyle relay squad of Young, Alejandro Ruiz-Soto, Tilyk Bonner and Matsuura combined to finish in 1:49.10 to place second.

On the women's side, Adelyn Veras led the way in the 100-yard backstroke (1:25.11, season-best) and 200-yard IM (3:09.63) events for fourth and eighth place finishes, respectively.  Amy Arias-Torres followed with a fifth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (8:59.68, season-best) and seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:42.22).  Mia Hidalgo finished the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:42.23 for sixth place.  Diana Castellanos touched the wall sixth in the 500-yard freestyle (10:12.15) and seventh in the 200-yard freestyle (3:35.17) while Angelica Galletti grabbed sixth place (2:12.08) in the 100-yard backstroke and 10th (1:12.89) in the 50-yard freestyle events.  Rebecca Warshauer claimed seventh (100-yard freestyle, 1:40.30) and eighth (200-yard freestyle, 4:01.58) in her competitions. Magan Blige took sixth (100-yard freestyle, 1:28.02) and seventh (50-yard freestyle, 36.92) while Yvette Domond finished eighth in the 50-yard freestyle (44.74) race.

Galletti, Blige, Warshauer and Domanaye Newman finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 2:43.65.
